KIT HEATHCOCK
I have been a words person all my life, buried in books from a young age and proofreading school magazines for fun. I branched out into French and Italian words at university, which took me on a wonderful voyage of discovery to Italy, living in Rome for a year and working and travelling all over Italy for another seven.
Working for ATG Oxford as a Tour Manager on their upmarket walking holidays, I grew to know and love Tuscany, Umbria and Le Marche in minutest detail as I drove along uncharted strade
bianche to remote picnic spots, with baskets of delicious local cheeses and hams, bread and focaccia fresh from the bakery filling the minibus with tantalising aromas, to lay out a picnic feast for a group of hungry walkers. Learning about food and wine the best way, by tasting it in a wonderful variety of restaurants from family trattoria to gourmet ristorante and planning four course menus around all the seasonal and regional specialities from wild asparagus in spring to porcini mushrooms and truffles in autumn.
Having children and moving from London to Cape Town have inadvertantly turned
me into an armchair traveller for now, but have inspired me to turn back to words
for work, writing, copyediting and proofreading for the world wide web.
Now I explore the world through my blog. Through writing about food, life in South Africa, children and family, I have discovered a wonderful, international community of writers and photographers, sharing words, wisdom, wit and everyday experiences, some specialising in gourmet food, others writing about life, the universe and everything. Real life friendships can flourish across the globe in this virtual world, where distances vanish in a mouse-click. One friend I am delighted to have made through our blogs is Corey Amaro, whose wonderfully atmospheric photographs embellish Just the Planet.
Real life world wide travel should be resumed shortly, just as soon as I have trained the children to travel for more than one hour in the car without a mutiny breaking out.
