COGNE, ITALY
Cogne's winter wonderland, Valle d'Aosta, Italy
As the mother
of young children, I have fantasized about the perfect
winter get-away. My children, now 8 and 10, are fairly
independent, but winter activities, be it skiing or sledding,
inevitably require extra effort on the part of parents
to assist. Socks pulled up, pants leg down, snow pants
up, inner pant leg back up, so pull it down, left ski
boot on, right ski boot on, left one hurts, left one
off. Add to that the necessity of driving from hotel
to ski rental shop, a shuttle to the slopes and back
again, and a 'relaxing' winter family vacation becomes
nothing more than a different kind of work ... read more

Cogne to The French Riviera
Finding a luxury property when you are traveling as a couple isn't a daunting proposition. If you have a good resource, like JUST THE PLANET, a reliable travel agent, or the recommendation of a friend, you're on your way. Finding a luxurious setting when you're traveling with the whole brood in tow, is more challenging. Some luxury properties don't allow children under a certain age, and those that do, often aren't particularly accommodating or welcoming when it comes to the unique needs of youngsters. There's no point traveling to a luxury destination if you aren't going to feel that the kids are not only accepted, but embraced. You need to feel relaxed, and they need to have fun.
A white-gloved butler, following you down the hallway, polishing
the carved mahogany furniture, as your three year old passes
by with sticky fingers, just isn't going to give you that
settled-in feeling. We've endeavored to find those luxury
properties who really mean it when they say, "we welcome children." The ones we've included use a capital "W" in the word, welcome, so if you see it in this section, don't hesitate to pick up the phone and make a reservation. And leave the peanut-butter jar at home – you
can order it from room service.
Should you have suggestions for our research or ideas that you feel may be relevant
to other travellers, please send us a note to ideas@justtheplanet.com.
We'd really like to hear from you.
